Powering Today, Building a Clean Tomorrow

From day one, Granite Shore Power has operated its generating assets in a responsible manner with an uncompromising commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.  We at Granite Shore Power embrace operating assets others view as challenged, confident in our operating responsibility and stewardship for the environment.

Granite Shore Power acquired the thermal electric generators from Public Service Company of New Hampshire on January 10, 2018, as a result of the state-mandated divestiture.  New Hampshire’s Public Utilities Commission oversaw and approved the divestiture, with the engagement and participation of numerous participants, including policymakers, environmental organizations, organized labor, municipalities and other stakeholders.

Granite Shore Power’s generating stations have served the energy needs of families and businesses across New Hampshire for nearly three quarters of a century.  Today, these stations have an important, yet limited, part of New Hampshire’s energy infrastructure.  While the region transitions its generation fleet to renewable and alternative sources, GSP’s fleet safely and responsibly keeps New Hampshire warm on our coldest nights and cool during our hottest days.

From our earliest days we have been clear that Granite Shore Power is fully committed to transitioning our facilities away from coal into a newer, cleaner energy future for the New England region.  We are making good on our promise to transition our coal-fired plants to clean energy facilities, meeting the changing needs of the region.

In March 2024, Granite Shore Power announced a historic agreement with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) whereby the parties set a firm date for the voluntary closure by GSP of operations at Schiller Station in Portsmouth and at Merrimack Station in Bow, New England’s last remaining coal-fired power plants.  That agreement paves the way for the creation of first-of-their-kind Clean Energy Parks in the state of New Hampshire.  The end of coal-fired generation in New England is a bold step in GSP’s long-standing repowering plan to facilitate exciting new economic growth at each facility.

A clean energy future is the reality we’ve always planned at Granite Shore Power. We’re proud to share that we’ve taken the first of several steps to achieve our goal. Over the next few years, we’ll embark on a transformative journey that will reshape energy production in New England.

We have announced the voluntary closures of Merrimack Station and Schiller Station, marking the end of coal-fired generation in the region. Our commitment to sustainability and innovation remains steadfast – and we’ve wasted no time in moving forward with plans for a reliable, cleaner future.
